Care Instructions

Cleaning your NOMAD is a snap. Let it fully cool down and then remove the ash. As needed, clean your grill with mild soap and warm water. Never use any harsh chemical cleaners as it may damage the anodized finish. Be sure to completely dry your grill and grates before storage so it’s ready for your next adventure. Listed below are best practices for clean & care (by component) to ensure your grill lasts a lifetime:

OUTER SHELL:
Although anodizing aluminum creates a very hard surface, you can actually damage it if you use a harsh cleaner on it. Here are a few best practices we recommend for cleaning the exterior of the aluminum case (with Type II Anodization finish)...

~ Pick A Neutral Cleaner:
The best cleaners for anodized aluminum are close to neutral (in the pH range of six to eight) as opposed to anything too acidic or too alkaline. We've found that dishwashing soap and/ or Bar Keepers Friend (in conjunction with Magic Erasers) are both great choices.

~ Test The Cleaner:
Before you use the cleaner on the whole area, try it out on an inconspicuous area to make sure the cleaner doesn't stain or damage the anodized aluminum before using it to clean the rest of the aluminum surface.

~ Use Light Abrasion If Necessary:
A sponge with a bit of abrasion can help clean the tough surface of anodized aluminum. However, stick to something with mild abrasive properties, like a scrubby sponge (NOT a steel wool scrubber). If it's only lightly soiled, stick to a clean rag or washcloth.

CAST COOKBOX:
When your coals are completely extinguished, you can properly dispose of the remnants by dumping the coals or by using a Shop-Vac to vacuum out the ash. The interior cookboxes are die-cast aluminum with a Mil-Spec, Type III Hardcoat anodized finish. Those parts have the same finish found in automotive and aerospace parts, so you can use a bit of dish soap there as well and could hose or spray those internal cookbox parts with a high-pressure rinse.

How does it work?

The NOMAD is a charcoal-fueled portable grill and smoker. 

  1. Find a safe place to grill
    Place your NOMAD on a secure/solid, non-combustible surface (on the ground, a stable table, or a metal stand). Never place your grill directly on a plastic table, or any composite surface, as they could melt or catch fire.
  2. Light your charcoal
    Use a chimney starter with 1-2 NOMAD Fire Starters in the base to help quickly light your coals. Wait until charcoal is burning all the way through and covered in ash (usually 30+ minutes). Use tongs to safely load your charcoal across the fins of your cookbox for maximum airflow.
  3. Grilling mode for high heat/direct fire
    open the grill up flat and utilize both sides for cooking (with optional second grate). Load 9-12 bricks of NOMAD 100% All-Natural Charcoal in each cookbox for ripping hot searing temps.
  4. Smoker mode for low & slow offset cooking
    For single-grate smoking with the hood closed, load 6-9 bricks of NOMAD Fire for a typical two-zone, offset cook. We recommend restricting your charcoal to a third of the cookbox (to the side opposite the thermometer), freeing up the other two-thirds to place your protein. There's no built-in deflector by design and so you have some flexibility there. We're fans of using a few pieces of our Smoking Wood Splits to act as a partition while also lending smoky flavor.

Great for camping - grilling AND smoking meat!

"Recently used this on a camping trip; I did smoked burnt ends one day, and we grilled steaks on it while we were there also. I did so great and was easy to use! I used the videos online to help me especially with the smoking part of it, as I wasn’t sure which vents should be opened or closed while smoking meat. How does it do in windy conditions?
Hi Chelsea. The NOMAD Grill performs incredibly well in windy conditions. The hot coals and ash are shielded inside two deep cookboxes. And in an extreme weather conditions, you can always close the hood of the grill. Thanks again!

The description says this can hold 30 burgers, but in the photos on the website and reviews the most I’ve seen is 8 burgers per side tightly packed or 2 smash burger comfortably. What size burgers are you using to fit 30 burgers (15 per side?)

Love what I am seeing but I have one question. Since the grill grates appear to have a convex bow to them, how to they work with skewers? I would this skewers need a flat surface? The middle of the skewer would be touching the grate but both ends would we off the grate if the grate has a upward bow to it. Can anyone comment please. Many thanks!
Hi Joe, If you are referring to our Cast Cooking Grate, it's actually designed with that domed or "cambered" shape to add extreme rigidity to the part as well as a bit of extra coal clearance. Pro Tip: flip a grate over and BOOM — you got a veggie basket! Perfect for skewers. This will also help control those brats and dogs. Also, two grates are designed to nest on top of one another (on the base side) and they will both fit inside the grill for easy transport. Can the two halves be separated?
The two cookboxes are hinged together at the outer shell casings, so you'd have to remove the pin which isn't really recommended.
Can I use a non stick pan to cook eggs and bacon.....would this require the turning the grate over

How do you recommend lifting a hot grate to add more charcoal for an extended cook? Obviously very carefully, but there does not seem to be a readily apparent way to grasp the grate. Thanks
We recommend using the tongs or the bbq fork from our [BBQ Tool Set](https://nomadgrills.com/products/nomad-bbq-tool-set) to easily pry up and lift the grate off the cookbox. Obviously, most tongs or bbq forks will work here too, we just think our set is better built and really rad). Thanks!
